276 thermal projects sanctioned in five years:

In future, there might be a shortage of coal for a power plant but there has been no objection in the clearance for the setting of these power plant and coal mining by environment ministry in last five years.

Though the annual average power capacity abides during the period was about 7500 MW but clearance was given for an average of 45000 MW annually by the environment ministry.

The report issued by the center for science and environment indicates that in the 11th five-year plan period, 267 thermal power plants were granted clearances adding up to 1.76 lakh MW capacity - almost doubling the existing installed capacity in the country.

This figure is about two and half times the capacity of thermal power plants installed in the country in 60 yrs after independence.

Granting clearances at this rate which is more than sixfold the actual installation of thermal power plants as well as granting clearance for coal supplies, has raised several questions against the environment ministry.

The 'go no go' controversy evoked over the past two years had no impact on the clearance process even the coal ministry tried to get it leveled.

Records show that even almost half the forestland diverged for mining - about 26,000 hectares - was for coal mining.
